Guide to modifying the templates: The Secret

In our serious game, The Secret, players will be tasked with investigating a company on the verge of releasing a revolutionary project on the market. To complete the mission, they’ll infiltrate the company’s headquarters with the help of their partner Scorpio. There, they’ll find clues to advance the story and uncover other documents that make up their training experience.

To customize the game template, follow these 3 easy steps:

  1. Prepare your content.
  2. Define what knowledge and skills you want students to put into practice.
  3. Include this content in your game using the table at the bottom of this document.

1. Prepare your content (5 lessons).

The Secret is a 5-level game that has a lesson in each level. This means you’ll need to organize your training material into 5 parts. By default, each lesson in the game is a “Comic” or “Video,” but this can be changed and made to be text, video, PDF, URL, or image format. You can also use a combination of any of these formats if you prefer.

You should know that at the end of some lessons, there will be a test embedded in some dialogue.

TIPS
☞ Texts should be formatted in a way that’s easy for students to read and reference. No one wants to read an unstructured wall of text.PDFs should never be more than 2 pages long.
☞ Videos should only be a few minutes each. Long videos take people out of the flow of training. Consider using the URL building block to share content from your company’s webpage or the internet at large. This is generally more immersive than copying and pasting texts from there.

For training material to be effective, it must be:

  • Practical
  • Useful
  • Applicable either in the workplace or in everyday life.

Whittle down your content as much as possible, and get rid of everything that’s not essential to your learning objectives. As a general rule for The Secret, try not to include more information than you could reasonably convey in a 1-hour class.

💡IDEA: If your content includes lengthy reference documents your students don’t necessarily need to learn, explain how, where, and when they can access them instead of including that information in a lesson.

2. Define what key skills and knowledge you want to put into practice (5 tests).

For each lesson, define which points you want your students to remember, understand, or use in real life. Base your tests around these points. You’ll need to write one or more questions, each with 3 possible answers: 1 right and 2 wrong.

Ask questions that help you measure understanding and retention or address a common problem, then prepare feedback for each possible answer.

TIPS
☞ Giving feedback is extremely important. It helps students learn from their mistakes and reinforces correct answers.
☞ Try to avoid trick questions (being wrong because of phrasing or a technicality) unless this addresses a common real-life misconception or problem. Questions of this kind are frustrating and ineffective. Remember, the goal of your questions is to remind and reiterate the key points and check for understanding.

 3. Customize the mission with your own images, logos, and documents.

► The story’s mission is represented by an image that can be customized with your company’s logo or the name of your training program.

Level 1 → Scene 1 → Object Package → 3rd block “Comic”

► Optional: There’s a minigame where players must look through documents on a computer. One of the documents is called “Apps” and it corresponds to a hint in the game so it can’t be changed. However, all other documents called “My Documents” can be replaced by a PDF of your choosing.

Level 2 → Scene 3 → Clickable Area Computer Reception → 3rd block MG Computer Elevator

► Optional: You can also put your company logo in the game. To do this, add a “Poster” element to any scene in levels 2-5.

4. Use the following table as a guide to successfully add your content to the game.

This table indicates where you can put lessons and tests.
